About Dr. Velyvis

Dr. John Velyvis is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon and hip and knee specialist who offers Bay Area and Daly City, California, patients the most advanced, minimally invasive surgeries at Peninsula Orthopedic Associates. As a leading expert on robotic-assisted partial and total knee resurfacing surgery, Dr. Velyvis is a surgeon who cares about decreasing downtime for his patients and restoring their high quality of life

Dr. Velyvis studied biomedical engineering at Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts, from 1985-1989, when he was also a member of the school’s elite rowing team. His four years of competition gave him a deep appreciation for human mechanics and body movement.

After earning his medical degree at Columbia University’s prestigious School of Medicine in New York in 1998, Dr. Velyvis went on to complete his residency in orthopedic surgery at Albany Medical Center in Albany, New York, and fellowship training at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, where he specialized in hip and knee surgery.

Through his education, training, and experience, Dr. Velyvis helps his patients by using innovative surgical techniques that decrease the length of hospital stays and recovery times, with the goal of allowing his patients to feel their joints move naturally more quickly. In fact, Dr. Velyvis finds that the best part of his day is the follow-up visits with his patients who can’t believe they have their lives back.

When he’s not directly treating patients at his office, Dr. Velyvis is often reading about the latest technologies and helping develop them with the world’s foremost biomedical companies.

Dr. Velyvis is also the director of Robotic Surgery, Adult Reconstruction, and Total Joint Surgeon for hip and knee replacement at Seton Medical Center Orthopedics in Daly City.
