Regenerative Medicine Q & A

What is regenerative medicine?

Regenerative medicine is a medical process that creates living, functioning tissue to replace diseased or damaged parts. You may know it best as a bone marrow or organ transplant, but recent advances in the areas of regeneration have found the certain cells in your own body may assist in the health and healing of your tissue. These cells include platelet-rich plasma (PRP) and stem cells.

Dr. Jones studied stem cell regenerative medicine and orthobiologics at the Institute for Human Performance in Syracuse, New York, and has been named an innovator in Orthobiologics & Advancing Regenerative Medicine by The Orthobiologics Institute.

What is PRP?

Due to its high concentration of platelets and specialized growth factors, PRP is a treatment that helps promote healing and the regeneration or replacement of tissue, nerve, endings, and blood vessels.

Your blood is a mixture of liquid and solid components, which include red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets, and growth factors. To make the PRP used for treatment, Dr. Jones spins a sample of your blood to separate out the liquid portion from the solid to create a concentration of platelets and growth factors.

Many famous athletes have used PRP to help them heal from their sports-related injuries.

What are stem cells?

Stem cells are blank cells that have the ability to form into any cell your body needs. For example, if you need new muscle or more blood vessels for an area to help with healing, the stem cells form into the cells necessary to create this tissue. The medical possibilities of stem cells are still under investigation, but the potential is unlimited and exciting.

Dr. Jones uses stem cells harvested from your own body for treatment.
