About Dr. Okumu

Fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeon, Kris Okumu, MD, brings over a decade of experience in minimally invasive spine surgery to Peninsula Orthopedic Associates in Daly City, California, serving patients throughout San Mateo County and the San Francisco Bay area.

Dr. Okumu began his professional education at the University of California, Berkeley where he earned his bachelor’s degree. After graduation, Dr. Okumu enrolled at the University of California, Davis School of Medicine where he earned his Doctor of Medicine.

Dr. Okumu completed his surgical residency at the San Francisco Orthopaedic Residency Program at St. Mary’s Medical Center and received subspecialty training in orthopedic surgery of adult and pediatric spinal disorders at The Hospital For Special Surgery in New York City.

Dr. Okumu specializes in minimally invasive spine surgery, adult and pediatric scoliosis surgery, artificial disc replacement surgery, and endoscopic spine surgery. However, he firmly believes most people with spine conditions can improve and recover with wellness-based, non-operative methods of treatment, including physical rehabilitation, chiropractic care, acupuncture, and lifestyle changes.

For those patients who do require surgery, Dr. Okumu offers the latest surgical techniques and evidence-based care. Dr. Okumu is one of just a handful of California-based surgeons who perform minimally invasive lumbar fusion surgery through Kambin’s triangle, a technique that uses incisions less than 1 centimeter long. Dr. Okumu also offers computer navigation assisted spine surgery and has received training in robotic-assisted spine surgery.

Dr. Okumu is a proud member of the Board of Directors of the California Orthopaedic Association and also serves on the Audit Committee of the North American Spine Society.

When he isn’t spending time with patients, Dr. Okumu loves to pay it forward. He is active in several volunteer organizations and regularly travels to his birth country of Uganda to perform spine and orthopedic surgeries on patients at Mulago Hospital in Kampala, Uganda.

Dr. Okumu welcomes any patient seeking high-quality orthopedic care in the Daly City, California, areas.
